Crusaders and Tradition Bearers

Abstract

Are you a crusader or a tradition bearer? Crusaders are change agents who see problems in the present and want to make things better for the future. Tradition bearers are the preservers of what is best from the past and the present. Are you more likely to support innovation or the status quo? Do you feel yourself being lured into the future by aspirations, or are you hanging on to the past because of fear? Creative and future thinking requires holding tension among opposites and managing paradoxes. Here are other examples of polarities to manage: cost and quality; market driven and product driven; centralized and decentralized; innovation and standardization; autocratic and participatory; planning and action; specific and general; individual and team.

Design for Health

Abstract

A global group (funders, implementers, and designers) who are committed to the shared vision of design as a means to achieve global health goals.

"For global health practitioners, we hope to provide resources and guidance that increase the understanding, appropriate use, and value of design as a complementary approach to addressing the challenges we all encounter in our work.  For the design community, our aim is to better communicate design’s value within the global health community, to clarify how design can integrate into global health programming, to attract the best talent, and to support their engagement in global health.  For the global community, we strive to listen to the people we seek to impact and include them as participants in the design and implementation of holistic and measurable global health interventions."

Digital Habitats and Communities of Practice Resources

Abstract

Etienne and Beverly Wegner- Trayner are thought leaders in the area of social learning and communities of practice (COP).  COPs are formed by people who engage in a process of collective learning in a shared domain of human endeavor: a tribe learning to survive, a band of artists seeking new forms of expression, a group of engineers working on similar problems, a clique of pupils defining their identity in the school, a network of surgeons exploring novel techniques, a gathering of first-time managers helping each other cope. Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.

FOR LEARN Online Foresight Guide

Abstract

The FOR-LEARN project aimed at consolidating and improving accessibility to Foresight knowledge and know-how, advancing Foresight knowledge and promoting Foresight throughout Europe. It is part of the European Foresight Knowledge Sharing Platform. The most important outcome of this project is the FOR-LEARN On-line Foresight Guide. It guides users throughout the critical steps of design, implementation and follow-up of a Foresight project and gives a description of the main methods that can be used. Clear and easy-to-access information is provided, with real case illustrative examples. It is today a unique resource on Foresight and its techniques, and it is used by the community of Foresight practitioners and by those who want to learn how to apply Foresight in policy development.

Foresight The Manual (United Nations Development Program)

Abstract

This Manual is intended for decision and policy makers in developing countries and for development organisations interested in applying foresight methods to their policy, planning and innovation efforts. The first chapter describes four specific applications of foresight for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Chapter two gives some practical pointers and caveats for those initiating a foresight process. The third chapter provides some popular frameworks to conceptualize foresight events and gives a first glimpse of the many foresight methods available. The fourth chapter, lastly, gives an overview of some of the foresight methods that are currently in use. This overview does not claim to be complete or comprehensive; a quick internet search would throw up many more. The methods selected and presented, however, in combination with the preceding chapters, will enable governments and organisations to formulate and shape a successful foresight for development process.

Future of Philanthropy

Abstract

This report shares the findings from the Future of Philanthropy Open Foresight research project. It identifies and discusses some common challenges today, and also explores several shared ambitions. What is clear from all our discussions is that we are seeing a fundamental shift in when we give, how we give, how we receive and how change is created through philanthropy. In addition, the report highlights several important emerging opportunities such as the rise of the global elite, the increasing influence of female philanthropists and the increasing demand for transparency.

Future Research Methods

Abstract

Futures research, which is concerned with understanding social conditions, change, and consequences of change, is a set of techniques as well as a philosophy. As a philosophy, futures research supports the analysis, development, and evaluation of possible, plausible, probable, and preferable futures based on a set of parameters and trends. Results of futures research efforts help stake-holders analyze missions in light of these projected future trends. Health futures research does more than identify what might happen; it enables individuals and organizations to identify or enhance the leadership necessary to move in desired directions.   As a set of techniques, futures research provides methods for gathering, analyzing, and evaluating data to assist decision makers in understanding how consequences of a decision may or may not alter alternative future projections.
