National Institute for Nursing Research

Abstract

The mission of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is to promote and improve the health of individuals, families, and communities. To achieve this mission, NINR supports and conducts clinical and basic research and research training on health and illness, research that spans and integrates the behavioral and biological sciences, and that develops the scientific basis for clinical practice. NINR’s Strategic Plan: Advancing Science, Improving Lives, focuses on areas of science in which the health needs are greatest, and in which NINR-supported research can have the largest impact. It is organized around four areas of scientific focus: symptom science, wellness, self-management of chronic conditions, and end-of-life and palliative care. Two other areas, promoting innovation and developing the nurse scientists of the 21st century, are emphasized in all areas of NINR’s research programs. The Plan is intended to be a living document, one which can be adapted as new opportunities and challenges arise.

A New Methodology for Anticipating STEEP Surprises

Abstract

In technological forecasting and futures research on social change, the term wild card (a.k.a. disruptor or STEEP surprise), traditionally refers to a plausible future event that is estimated to have low probability but high impact should it occur. This article introduces: A Type II Wild Card, defined as having high probability and high impact as seen by experts if present trends continue, but low credibility for non-expert stakeholders of importance. A four-level typology of wild cards, leading to a systematic methodology for monitoring the emerging awareness and credibility of high probability disruptors and for assessment of stakeholder-specific views about them. An informal pilot test of the methodology both indicated that the approach has practical value, and highlighted the importance of highly plausible tipping points which could rapidly lead to massive disruption, either toward collapse or reformation in the complex adaptive systems (CAS) making up human civilization.

AACN Futures Task Force Final Report

Abstract

The Board of Directors of AACN established the Futures Task Force in 2014 to conduct a review of the current and future changes in health care, nursing and higher education and develop recommendations . Four recommendations from the final report are: 1) AACN should be the driving force for innovation and excellence in nursing education. 2) AACN should position nursing as a leading partner in advancing systemic improvements in health and health care. 3) AACN should expand its reach and influence through the development of an organizational structure that is representative and responsive to key stakeholders. 4) AACN should be a leader in information curation and synthesis related to nursing education, practice and research.

Acceleration Studies Foundation

Abstract

The Acceleration Studies Foundation is an educational 501(c)(3) nonprofit engaged in outreach, education, research, and selective advocacy with respect to issues and processes of accelerating change. The organization helps communities, companies, and individuals improve their foresight capacity (innovation, creativity, strategy, planning, forecasting, and security) with respect to  - accelerating technological change. The objectives of the organization are 1) To promote a critical understanding of accelerating processes of planetary change, in service to societal, professional and personal evolutionary development. 2) To improve the methods individuals and organizations use to create, manage, and predict the future by advancing the emerging disciplines of acceleration studies, evolutionary development studies, and strategic foresight. 3) To broadly help individuals, organizations, and society to discover and create a future of "exponential promise".

Alliance of Nurses For a Healthy Environment (ANHE)

Abstract

The Mission of ANHE: Promoting healthy people and healthy environments by educating and leading the nursing profession, advancing research, incorporating evidence-based practice, and influencing policy. There are three work groups in this organization. The Education Work Group is developing curriculum materials for nursing schools and for continuing education. The Practice Work Group is sharing resources for nurses who are “greening” their hospitals and other health care facilities, as well as developing best practices and model policies to decrease unnecessary environmental exposures in our workplaces. They are also exploring standard practices that recognize environmental exposures as a determinant of health. The Research Work Group is also promoting more nurse researchers in this area, mentoring new researchers, and sharing information about funding sources. The Policy/Advocacy Work Group is addressing environmental health policies at the state and national level and helping to mobilize the nursing community to support policies that encourage citizen knowledge about potential hazards through “right to know mechanisms”, reduce/eliminate known and suspected hazardous chemicals that are in our air, water, food, soil, and products.

American Creativity Association (ACA)

Abstract

The mission of the  American Creativity Association (ACA) is to enhance the use of creativity throughout our society to better the human condition. To  realize its mission, the ACA provides forums for the exchange ideas; opportunities for networking and fellowship; and supports a clearing house for information on the state of the art in creativity research and practice. Explore the breadth and depth of the creativity resources the association has aggregated. Consider how creative thinking strategies can be used to promote foresight leadership, create scenarios and contribute to desired futures.

American Medical Informatics Association and Nursing Informatics Work Group

Abstract

AMIA is a community committed to the vision of a world where informatics transforms people’s care. Over the last 35 years, the use of informatics has grown exponentially to improve health and to make better healthcare decisions. Today, informatics is the key to accelerating the current goals of healthcare reform. Data produced throughout health and healthcare is the driving force of informatics and its ability to innovate critical advancements that directly benefit people. AMIA’s members are critical to discovering these insights, which is why AMIA is committed to be the professional home for the informaticians of today and the driver of informatics’ future. There is a vibrant and active Nursing Informatics works group within the organization that is shaping the future of nursing informatics and data science applications to health and health care.

Anticipatory Leadership and Strategic Foresight: Five ‘Linked Literacies’

Abstract

We live, as is so often said, in volatile, uncertain, complex, changing and ambiguous times. The world of the future will demand capacities that currently comprise mere options. There will be a need for new ways of thinking, planning, directing, communicating and managing; with a critical component common to them all—‘anticipatory leadership’. Quintessentially, such leadership relates to the future and is concerned with transforming the ‘mind-set’ of those engaged in policy formulation and plan implementation. Our concept-oriented paper seeks to identify five linking ‘anticipatory literacies’: Awareness; Authenticity; Audacity; Adaptability; and Action. It concludes with a call to the Professional Futures Community and the world’s leading Business Schools to collaborate in creating a ‘Grand Transformation’ in their collective mind-sets inspired by Anticipatory Leadership through Strategic Foresight.
